If you have strong desires or dreams of working for yourself, but don't have a particular business in mind, you may well be wondering what kind of business opportunity you could or should start or get involved in. Fortunately, the answer is almost always the same - start a venture about which you have intimate knowledge. Even then it is vital to do your homework, research and evaluate. Also, please remember that this is equally true of internet or online businesses as it is of bricks and mortar business opportunities.

Knowing It Inside Out

Do not fall into the trap of starting a particular business because someone tells you that "This is a sure thing". Potential customers will part with their hard-earned money only if you convince them that they are getting value for their money. You, therefore, will need to know what you are doing, no matter what the activity.

Starting a business in which you have experience has many advantages. You can use your knowledge about the industry, your training and skills and your network of contacts. Contacts may able to help with financing, finding suppliers and customers.

If you are interested in turning something you know and love into a business, talk to people you have worked with about what it takes to run that kind of business. Learn all you can about start-up costs, overheads and expenses and how much revenue you can realistically expect to make.

Unfamiliarity Breeds Failure

The lure of quick profits entices many people to start businesses in areas they know little or nothing about (I know, I learned the hard way). This is a sure recipe for failure and if the business you want to start, but are set on it, be prepared to spend enough time and energy learning it inside out before you begin the venture.

You should get experience working in the chosen field, talk to entrepreneurs to get a low down of the industry and then evaluate you expertise. research profit prospects and remember the following are high risk ventures.

Computer stores, laundries, florists, used cars, restaurants, childrens' clothes shops, bakeries and grocers all tend to have high failure records. If you are serious about starting an online business, you need to be aware that certain market areas may not be saturated but, because of current competition, will prove to extremely difficult. Difficult in the sense of recognition, marketing, advertising costs, and above all, regular income and revenue.

The more obvious market niches are internet marketing itself, online dating, weight loss and dieting, adult sites, self improvement.

If your business idea is on the list, don't despair - it doesn't mean you should automatically abandon it. I have been and continue to be successful in the internet marketing niche. However, it means that you need to be more critical and careful with the numbers when preparing your business plan.

The ability to work with people. A good rapport is always needed in an entrepreneur. If s/he is unable to influence people then s/he will not likely succeed.

The ability to be a risk-taker. In the world of business, wins are not always secured. There are only two possibilities: winning and losing. Whichever phase confronts her / him, a good entrepreneur knows how to handle it.

Some will have success where others have failed.
